Gardenette hostesses Sherry Klein, Dottie Boudreax, guest speaker Krista Salathe Adams, hostess Marilyn Wright welcome in the new garden club year at their September 14 meeting at the Strawberry Board building.
Krista Salathe Adams, Purple Martin Conservation Initiative director, outlined the steps to attract Purple Martins to your backyard, at the Gardenettes first meeting of their new year September 14, held at the Strawberry Board Building in Ponchatoula.
Martins like to live in colonies, so nesting boxes should be placed away from trees and near a water source. Each year the boxes should be cleaned out by January 1 to accommodate the birds who return to the area by March 1, according to Adams. A graduate of Ponchatoula High School and Southeastern Louisiana University she is also a program manager at Louisiana State University and a director, Outreach Chair at Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater Baton Rouge.
Club treasurer Ellen Pusey made a presentation to Adams following her powerpoint presentation. The club is a member of Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. (LGCF Inc.), Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc.
Hostesses for the meeting were Marilyn Wright, Dottie Boudreaux and Sherry Klein. Wright was appointed vice president to fill the term of the late Pat Walsh. A collection for Penny Pines to replant trees in Kisatchie National Forest and Quarters for Waters to help underdeveloped countries with a fresh water system - was passed by Jamie LeBlanc.
Garden of the Month and Genesis committee members Margaret Bailey, Cricket Ayala and Rose Ann Husser announced the Genesis Award winner for September and October would be First Baptist Church. The photos will be taken later this month. Cynthia Cummer, Sunshine Chairman, read a letter from the LGCF Inc. acknowledging Walsh and Peggy Avery being added to their Memorial Book of Rembrance. Money for the Gardenette donation will go toward the organization's Landscape Design School.
Vicky Fannaly, president, announced the design teams for the February Joint Tangipahoa Garden Club meeting hosted by the Gardenettes. Teams are Fannaly, Klein and Margaret Hardin (head table); Sandy Cusick and Cummer; Leblanc and Mary Hirsch; Sunday Hanson and Susan Pizani; Pusey and Carol McGough; Wright and Boudreaux; Husser and Kathy Bruce; Ayala and Bailey.
Two programs were tabled for the current year due to lack of a chairman. They were Bosom Buddy Bags and Coupons for Education. Boudreaux was announced as the new membership chairman. The chairman for the October 12 meeting include Bailey, Husser and Ayala. Members Wright and Bailey brought plants to share. Door prizes were won by McGough and Pusey.
