The 79th Annual Gardenette Award Banquet was held at Murphy's Seafood and Steak Restaurant in Hammond, May 12, celebrating the end of the club's year which runs from September to May.
Marilyn Wright received outstanding chairman award for her work with Garden of the Month, Genesis Award, Bosom Buddy Bags. President Vicky Fannaly opened the meeting and welcomed the club's new member Sunday Hanson and guests Sandy Leggio, Betty Jordan and Kathryn Martin.
Vice President Sandra Haro gave the opening prayer. Door prize arrangements were provided by Wright and Fannaly. Gardenettes are members of District VI Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc.
Fannaly gave a recap of the club year. She noted that although the club was unable to meet in person for the whole year, Zoom was tried with poor turnout. Two meetings were held with guest speakers and social distancing at the Strawberry Board Building in Memorial Park.
Activities were still held. Margaret Hardin registered the large oak across from the post office for Parker Layrisson; Carol McGough publicized National Garden Week and observed Make a Difference Day by honoring the police. Anna Poland coordinated decorating the two Christmas trees at North Oaks lobby and emergency room. Poland also organized the Arbor Day celebration in January.
Haro collected Box Tops for education and delivered them to Tucker Elementary School. Marilyn Wright and her ladies delivered over 75 bosom buddy bags to the hospital for surgery patients, along with handcrafted infant hats. She made three Garden of the Month and one Genesis awards.
According to Fannaly, it was nice to finally meet in person for the awards banquet. The club gained two new or returning members during the year - Dottie Boudreaux and Sunday Hanson. Gardenettes attending the banquet but not previously mentioned are Cynthia Cummer, Jamie LeBlanc, Ellen Pusey, Pat Walsh, Karen Moran, Susan Pizani.
The club regrets the loss of good members like Poland who is moving and others whose situations make it difficult to continue: Margaret Bailey, Carol McGough, Joan Morse, Jane O'Flynn and Susan Pizani.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW: September 2020 to May 2021
What a year it was!
***September - found us shut down and zooming on the computer. Not very warm and fuzzy! Officers were installed online by our District Director Carolyn Todd. Margaret Harden, Live Oak Chairman, registered the large oak across from the post office in honor of Parker Layrisson’s sons.
***October - we tried the Strawberry Hut but we were still nervous about the virus. Ronnie Rossie spoke on Daylilies. We gained Dottie Boudreaux, who returned to the club. Sonya Avery was able to attend and received a gift for her two years as president. Hostesses were Marilyn Wright, Pat Walsh and Jamie LeBlanc. Make a Difference Chairman Carol McGough, presented a large basket of snacks to the police department to thank them for their service. Marilyn Wright awarded Garden of the Month to the Rick and Kathy Prine on Hwy. 22 at the river.
***November - we returned to the Strawberry Hut for a presentation by John Grimm on Camellias. We had hostesses – Ellen Pusey, Margaret Hardin and Sonia Avery.
***December – By now we were really concerned about the spike in virus cases and cancelled the annual Christmas Tea. Anna Poland got a team of three to decorate the North Oaks hospital lobby and emergency room lobby.
***January – We planted a tree in Memorial Park for Arbor Day coordinated by Anna Poland chairman. No in person meeting was held.
***February – Box tops for Education chairman Sandra Haro delivered our box tops to Tucker Elementary School. No in-person meeting was held.
***March – Marilyn Wright, Bosom Buddy chairman, got a group to go to the hospital and deliver the over 75 bags and several infant hats. No in-person meeting was held.
***April – Marilyn Wright awarded Garden of the Month to Susan and Tillman Pizani. Marilyn Wright also gave Genesis for April-May to Collinswood Museum. A club picnic outdoors was planned but was rained out – only one brave soul, Pat Walsh, ventured forth.
***May – Marilyn Wright awarded Garden of the Month to Barbara and Francis Martino on Wadesboro Road.
***Regrets: Loss of members Margaret Bailey, Carol McGough, Joan Morse, Jane O’Flynn, Susan Pizani, Anna Poland. They will be missed. All contributed greatly to our programs and fellowship.
