AUGUST 2016
Joe and Laurie Townsend
42662 Jefferson Court
August 12, 2016
Joe and Laurie Townsend, homeowners at 42662 Jefferson Court for sixteen years, were awarded August Garden of the Month. Each month the Ponchatoula Gardenettes award a local homeowner for work done landscaping and maintaining their yard.
Joe, a local contractor (Townsend Homes), helps with the more strenuous tasks. Laurie enjoys the outside work and is refreshed by dips in the backyard pool. This August has been a challenge with frequent rains and humid, hot days. Many friends and family members required help to restore homes after the devastating floods in our area. Joe and Laurie were thankful they had no damage. Our hearts are heavy for those who lost past memories (photos and plants handed down through generations).
One place in the Townsend’s landscape where memories are made is the shaded deck area. Three large trees individually landscaped are joined by rock walkways. Yard art and many local plants and shrubs are used. daylilies, blue Plumbago, Liriope, Aztec grass, Iris, Vinca, horse tail rush, azaleas, firepower Nandina, Hydrangea, Hibiscus, and Lantana are just a few of the many different plants and shrubs used in this landscape. Thanks to Joe and Laurie for lovely scenery amidst the gloom of the floods.

June 2016
Lillian Skander
Lake Orleans
June 10, 2016
Garden of the Month for June - Lake Orleans Blvd. - Margaret Bailey, Vicky Fannaly, Carol Borgstede, Cricket Ayala, Cynthia Cummer, home owner Lillian Skander, Libbie Barron, Anna Poland.
What an awesome home and garden found by Ellen Pusey and Carol Borgstede! Lillian Skander the home owner was so gracious. Some of us bought jewelry from her workshop. If we have a lot of photos, it's because we had two cameras going and because we can post as many as we like! Such a nice person, Lillian will be joining our club in September. We will have a good new member.
Lillian Skander, Lake Orleans Blvd., Ponchatoula, was the recipient of Gardenettes Garden of the Month for June. Skander has an unusual backyard sanctuary with arbors, fencing and whimsical landscaping sculptures.
Under her backyard arbor, passion flowers and rangoon creeper shelter the outdoor furniture. Flooring is brick that extends into a walkway out to the back arbor which is thick with evergreen wisteria.
According to Skander, this is "wisteria Millettia reticulata, which isn’t a wisteria at all. Its oval leaves are evergreen, and it blooms when everything else in the garden is gasping in the heat. At 15 feet tall by 10 feet wide, evergreen wisteria grows less than half the reach of Chinese wisteria. And the purple/magenta bloom is lovely. The vine is suggested for zones 8 to 10."
An avid gardener, Skandar has a multitude of blooming flowers including scarlett bee balm, black-eyed Susan, peach and white true lilies, white and pale blue Agapanthus, climbing roses and true roses, yellow, orange , reds and white also knock out roses, Cosmos, sun flowers, fuchsia, white and orange society garlic, blue daze, zinnias, day lilies (strawberry candy and Stella d'Oro), Louisiana iris, caladiums, night blooming Jasmine, sweet olive trees, gardenias, Crocosmia, azaleas and camellias.
Other flowers abound and make this a truly outstanding Garden of the Month. Gardenettes are members of District VI of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. and the Deep South Region of the National Garden Clubs Inc.

Gardenettes awarded March Garden of the month to Michael Rosa on Tuesday April 8 at 135 Colver Drive. This home has a large curved drive accented with perfect edges of monkey grass. In the middle of this curve was an old oak tree with sweeping branches and trailing moss. The following Friday night the storms begin and sadly the tree fell victim to the wind and rain.
Surrounding the house is Nandina and holly both still full of red berries. The yard is aged with old azaleas, camellias, ferns, century plants and yuccas. At the entrance to the house is some bamboo and a trickling fountain setting the stage for relaxing in a beautiful yard.
