“Make One New Friend This Month”
Gardenettes held their first meeting of the new club year September 11 at the Strawberry Board building in Memorial Park. Hostesses for the meeting were president Sonya Avery, Sandra Haro, Joan Morse and Margaret Hardin.
Yearbooks outlining the programs for the coming year were distributed. Following the pledge of allegiance, prayer intentions were discussed, and club chaplain Morse said the prayer. Haro was announced as new club vice-president. Vicky Fannaly gave the treasurer’s report.
Poland received honors for her design “Pollination Celebration” and her horticulture specimens. Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc.
Winners of Genesis landscaping and Garden of the Month were announced by Margaret Bailey. She said that new waterproof signs were made for the home gardening winners. She set up teams to rotate in presenting the award. Partners included Bailey and Cricket Ayala, Marilyn Wright and Kathy Bruce, Jane O’Flynn and Susan Pizani, Ellen Pusey and Carol McGough.
Karen Moran, chairman of birds and conservation, said that the committee would present a very brief informational talk at each meeting. Morse took October; Moran, November; Wright, January; Jamie LeBlanc, March; Pizani, April.
Hardin joined the Tree committee. Chairman Anna Poland announced that the plaques made for the three Arbor Day honorees were being installed near young trees in Memorial Park. She also said that wheelchair high planters with a watering system were planned for construction as part of the Eagle Scout program. These would be used at Camelot assisted living to benefit the residents who liked to garden.
Bruce volunteered to chair the phone committee which calls members without email on events that are not listed in the yearbook. LeBlanc, Wright, Pizani and Cynthia Cummer asked to be added to the Sunshine Committee to help coordinate assistance for members who were homebound by sickness or surgery.
Honoring Make A Difference Day, the club decided to go October 9 and present Bosom Buddy Bags to North Oaks Hospital to give to their cancer and surgery patients. These decorative bags are designed to hold patient drains.
