Program: Nina Briley, Master Gardener, Hosting a Pollinator Party”
Hosting a Pollinator Party was the subject of Master Gardener Nina Briley's presentation to the Gardenettes at their November 13 meeting held at the Strawberry Board Building in Memorial Park.
A pollinator is an animal or insect that moves pollen from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma, causing the plant to make fruit or seeds, according to Briley. About 90% of all plant species need help with pollination; 75% of all food crops are pollinated by insects, bats, hummingbirds or even humans.
Briley noted the importance of attracting pollinators to the garden to help this important plant cycle of reproduction. She itemized the type of flowers and nectar solutions to use to welcome them to your yard.
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc. Hostesses for the meeting included Jamie LeBlanc, Marilyn Wright, Jane O'Flynn and Anna Poland.
Poland conducted the meeting in the absence of president Sonya Avery. The prayer and collect were dedicated to the memory of Liz Sanderson, an honored member. The high school scholarship applications are available for submission, according to Poland. She also noted the changes to the Christmas party and the scheduled December 3 at 9 a.m. for decorating the trees at North Oaks Hospital.
Members present but not previously mentioned included Cynthia Cummer, Carol McGough, Vicky Fannaly, Margaret Hardin, Pat Walsh, Margaret Bailey, Ellen Pusey, Cricket Ayala.
