Circle of Roses Recipient Margaret Bailey
From Junior Gardenette to club president in 2014-2015, Margaret Bailey has worked on as many as twelve of the club committees, often as chairman. Daughter of Circle of Roses recipient the late Edith Vitter, Margaret remembers gathering flowers and making “beginning arrangements,” learning about plants, trees and how to care for them as a member of the club sponsored Junior Gardenettes.
Born in Brookhaven MS, Margaret was raised in Ponchatoula, graduated from Ponchatoula High School and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge with a degree in Speech Pathology. She has a master’s in special education from the University of New Orleans.
During the next forty years, Margaret worked in Evangeline, Jefferson, and Lafayette parishes, as well as in Anchorage AK before retiring in Spring TX in 1990. Returning to live in Ponchatoula two years later, a good friend, Charlotte Faller, invited her to join the Gardenettes around 2008.
As a garden club member, Margaret helped the club win second place in 2011 and first place in 2012 for the Publicity Pressbook award. Margaret started a used magazine drive in the club for the local hospital waiting rooms which continued for six years. As president in 2014, she began the Bosom Buddy Bag program which continues to this day. In honor of her grandmother Arie Potter, club members sew colorful fabric bags for cancer and surgery patients to carry their drainage apparatus. These cheerful accessories have received a lot of appreciation from both the hospital staff and patients.
Margaret worked on the District VI Cleanest City committee when the Gardenettes sponsored the City of St. Gabriel which did not have a garden club and helped counsel Pearl River when they prepared to compete. As member of the Northshore Quilt Trail, Margaret and Cricket Ayala designed and painted the square representing the Gardenettes which hangs in the Kiwanis Park.
According to Margaret, “The things I am most proud to have done with the Gardenettes include the Bosom Buddy Bag program, planting pink roses honoring breast cancer awareness in city gardens on Make a Difference Day. I enjoyed working with the Toy and Bike Drive and decorating Christmas Trees at North Oaks Hospital with the club. A favorite project Horizons Youth Services Bureau provided the young clients with book sacks, Christmas presents and a landscaping renovation. Mainly, I love finding friends in our club and enjoying their camaraderie. I like helping our club achieve above average results in all the work in which we participate.”
Margaret Bailey is an active member of First Baptist Church in Ponchatoula.
