**January 21 Arbor Day Tree Planting TBA
JANUARY MEETING: Wednesday January 12 at 11:30 a.m. at Joe’s Italian Ristorante features Kyle Martin, second Vice President Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. as guest speaker. Many will remember Kyle as District VI director. Hostesses for the meeting are Cynthia Cummer, Susan Pizani, Jamie LeBlanc and Sandy Cusick. Bring three horticulture cuttings in clear bottles and an arrangement – Tiny Forests: moss, pinecones and other woodland treasures made into a miniature landscape. Should be fun to try.
ARBOR DAY: Friday January 21 is the official day to celebrate Arbor Day. Mayor Bob Zabbia requested a live oak tree. Chairman Susan Pizani will notify everyone closer to the date as to the time and location.
PLANTS FOR SHUT-INS: The biggest plant brought at the Christmas party was sent to our own Joan Morse who was not able to attend. Marilyn Wright delivered it. The rest of the plants were sent to Westminster Place for the people in poor health there. Westminster is a low income, senior care facility run by the Presbyterian Church. They were gratefully received.
FEBRUARY JOINT MEETING: Stem and Stamen Garden Club will be hosting the February 9 joint meeting at the Arena in Amite. We need a headcount, so think about it, and let us know at the January meeting so we can notify our hostesses. Vicky Fannaly has room for three in her car. If you can drive, let us know how many you can take.
CHRISTMAS CHEER: Another tradition, the Gardenettes 79th annual Christmas Party held at Kathy Bruce's beautiful home in Loranger. First time attendees were our new members Sunday Hanson, Sherry Klein, Rose Ann Husser, Sandy Cusick. Returning member Cricket Ayala joined the festivities.

NEW MEMBER: Sandy Cusick, introduced at the Poland’s going away dinner, has decided to join our group. She is a member of Cynthia Cummer’s extended family. Her daughter is married to Cynthia’s son. We welcome her to “our family” as well. Sandy has joined the Exhibits and Horticulture committee and will be working with chairman Kathy Bruce. She has already helped in our December events and will co-hostess in January.
PLANNING TO REJOIN / JOIN: Cricket Ayala and Rose Ann Husser above right. If you don’t know them, please make a point of meeting them at the January events. Cricket will be co-hostessing in March; Rose Ann, in April. Both will be helping Marilyn Wright with her two committees.

DECEMBER GARDEN OF THE MONTH: Mary Hirsch, 39764 Rue Mar Nei, received Garden of the Month honors for December from the Gardenettes. Presenting the award December 7, were Marilyn Wright, chairman, and members Cynthia Cummer and Jamie LeBlanc. Viewing the property from the street, the house does not show all the work that was put into the landscaping. When you walk into the back and see the lovely touches, it seems like a garden of Eden. The swimming pool is landscaped all around and has a bar with seating. A wrought iron fence borders the area. There are lots of trees and statuary on the acre or so plot, according to Wright. There is a full vegetable garden, a greenhouse with rare cacti, also a red maple, azaleas and camellias for color. Hirsch designed the landscape herself. Seasonal poinsettias are used in the front beds for a festive accent.
CHRISTMAS TREES: Gardenettes decorated Christmas trees at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. The club met November 30 just in time for the holidays to put ornaments on trees in the main lobby and in the emergency room lobby. Attending were Cynthia Cummer, Carol McGough, Sandy Cusick, Betty Jordan, Dottie Boudreaux, Margaret Hardin, Kathy Bruce, Ellen Pusey, Vicky Fannaly and Jamie LeBlanc.
GENESIS DECEMBER – JANUARY: Harry McKneely Funeral Home owner Lance Vicknair received Gardenettes Genesis Award for the landscaping at his Ponchatoula location. Presented by Genesis chairman Marilyn Wright, the plaque is for the months of December 2021 and January 2022. Sasanqua camellias blooming in the beds, lend a bright contrast to the variegated liriope borders. Permanent plantings of rose bushes have been cut back for the winter but are still visible in the well maintained planting areas, said Wright. Assisting her in the presentation were Gardenettes, Jamie LeBlanc, Margaret Hardin, Vicky Fannaly, Kathy Bruce, Betty Jordan and Dottie Boudreaux.
BETTER LATE: November Garden of the Month picture was a little late! Presented November 30, Norma and Edward Huber, 290 S. Ninth Street, received Garden of the Month honors for November from the Gardenettes chairman Marilyn Wright. Gardenettes on porch are Jamie LeBlanc, Sandy Cusick, Dottie Boudreaux, Margaret Hardin and Kathy Bruce. Standing in front of them are Cynthia Cummer, Betty Jordan, Vicky Fannaly, Norma Huber, Edward Huber and Garden of the Month Chairman Marilyn Wright.
