MARCH MEETING 10:30a.m. TIME CHANGE! Hosted by Sunday Hanson with Susan Pizani and Karen Hotard at the Strawberry Board Building. The March 8 meeting will begin promptly at 10:30; lunch will be served at 11:00 a.m. Our guest speaker Linda Ryan has to be out by 11 so to accommodate her, we are moving the time up half an hour. Be there early or you will miss her. If you're just coming for lunch and business meeting, no problem! Refreshments served at 11:00 a.m.
FEBRUARY MEETING: Amen! It’s over, and we came out of it smiling. Hero of the day was Mary Hirsch who covered our expenses and then some. It took months of work getting auction items together – thanks everyone who contributed! Thanks for everyone who helped her especially Jamie LeBlanc, Dottie Boudreaux, Margaret Bailey and Sunday Hanson. All the tables looked stellar. Everyone pitched in – amazingly proud of the teamwork displayed!
THANKS: LGCF President Roxanna Champagne wrote us: “I had a wonderful time at your Tangipahoa Parish Garden Clubs luncheon. Thank you for inviting me as a guest. The gift basket was a delightful surprise full of goodies, especially the books! You did an amazing job.”
FEEDBACK: Delighted at the planning meeting for the Deep South Convention, the chairman who attended our February extravaganza said she wanted twinkle lights scattered among the auction items like the Gardenettes had at the February meet. Mary Hirsh put some in our display which looked lovely!
LETTER: Officers change in April at the state convention. We will be getting a new District VI Directory Donna Moran. She wrote us: “Thank you so very much for inviting me to the recent joint meeting in Ponchatoula. You really did ‘Light Up My Life’ on that day. It was fun to make new friends and greet some old friends. The meal was delicious and the speaker was so much fun. Loved that you shared it all with me.”
DEEP SOUTH CONVENTION March 9-10: Held at the Airport Hilton in Kenner, this event boasts top notch speakers, lots of events. Registration cuts off March 1.
21St ANNUAL BATON ROUGE SPRING GARDEN SHOW – March 10-12: The LSU AgCenter and the School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences will present the 21st annual Baton Rouge Spring Garden Show March 10 to 12 at the John M. Parker Coliseum on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. The show will open Friday, March 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. for a preview “sip and shop.” The full show will run on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day and include numerous vendors selling plants and a variety of yard, garden and patio merchandise. The floor of the coliseum will be transformed into a world of plants and gardens for the event. “The 2023 spring garden show will feature exhibitor displays for plant sales, production, garden accessories, crafts and other products and services related to the garden industry,” said Lindsay Reed, show coordinator. “Also featured will be plant health and identification clinics and children’s activities.” General admission will be $7 per person, and children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. LSU and Southern University students get in free with student ID.
SPRING INTO COLOR: ST. TAMMANY MASTER GARDENERS March 23: Another festive, informative event sponsored by St. Tammany Master Gardeners at Castine Center at Pelican Park, 63350 Pelican Dr., Mandeville from 8:00 a.m. to noon. DESTREHAN PLANTATION SPRING GARDEN FES-TIVAL – March 25-26: The 2023 Destrehan Plantation Spring Garden Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 25 and 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 12034 River Road in Destrehan. The 2023 Spring Garden Festival will feature vendors and small business owners that focus on the porch, patio, yard and garden. The spring garden festival also will include seminars and exhibits, a country store, a discovery and activity tent for children, a beekeeping demonstration, a visit from the Easter Bunny from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on both days. There will also be an Easter egg hunt for children, live entertainment, spring drinks with alcohol and a food and beverage court. Parking is free and available on site. Additional parking is available at the Bridge Park and on the levee. Admission will be paid online through QR codes available on the Destrehan Plantation webpage and at the entry gate.
83RD ANNUAL COLUMBUS MS SPRING PILGRIMAGE JUBILEE OF HOMES– March 31-April 23: Join the Preservation Society of Columbus for a Mississippi tradition. Every weekend March 31-April 23, visitors will have an opportunity to go inside the city’s most unique, architecturally diverse, historic private homes and sites, many open for touring for the first time. It’s a month of tours, lectures, and special events. Have lunch with history experts, get to know a local artist, take in the mesmerizing performances of the Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science’s nationally recognized Tales from the Crypt, immerse yourself in the culture of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, and of course, experience Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s Mississippi Roadshow—all showcasing Columbus’ treasures. The garden show includes plant and garden product exhibits, sales throughout the garden, a children’s discovery tent, educational programs, live music, arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations and more. Educational programs will take place in the Garden Study Center and are free with entrance to the show. There also will be live music each day. This event is sponsored by the LSU AgCenter in cooperation with the Metro Area Horticulture Foundation, the New Orleans Botanical Garden, Louisiana Master Gardeners, New Orleans City Park and Friends of City Park. Admission to the show is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 4 years old and Friends of City Park members receive free admission. HAMMOND SPRING GARDEN DAY – April 15: The 2023 Hammond Spring Garden Day will be held April 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station.
The event will feature educational exhibits, kids’ activities, gardening seminars, gardening advice, and the Hammond Research Station plant sale. They will have vegetable starts, flowers, shrubs, trees, Super Plants and a whole lot more. There also will be food concessions. The purpose of these events is to educate the public on LSU AgCenter recommendations for gardening and related topics; showcase garden products and services available in the area; and provide a fundraising activity for the Hammond gardens and students at the Hammond Research Station. The LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station is located at 1549 Old Covington Highway in Hammond.

LGCF CONVENTION April 18-19: Held in Tallulah, this event has a festive first day tour into historic Natchez MS to tour the gardens and homes with lunch at the Sunnyside B&B. Good speakers and a change of LGCF officers will be held. https://www.lgcfinc.org/lgcf-convention.html
20th ANNUAL NORTHSHORE GARDEN SHOW/ PLANT SALE – April 21-22: The St. Tammany Master Gardeners will host the 20th annual Northshore Garden Show and Plant Sale on April 21 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days.Education programs will be presented on both days between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with a separate children’s activities booth on the show floor. More than 40 vendors will be selling plants, and other garden-related items will be available. The show is held at the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds, 1301 N. Florida St. in Covington. There is a $5 gate fee for all individuals 18 and over. Those under 18 and first responders may enter free of charge. Proceeds from the garden show help fund the Bobby Fletcher Sr. Scholarship and the St. Tammany Master Gardener Association Scholarship. MADISONVILLE GARDEN CLUB FLOWER SHOW April 26: We have been invited to attend the club’s Annual Flower Show at the Maritime Museum Louisiana in Madisonville.
2nd NORTHSHORE ART IN BLOOM April 28-30 – Held at Columbia Theater in Hammond. Floral competition entries start January 2. Show features a blown glass exhibit, art and flower vendors, lectures, one-act play staged performances. What’s not to like!
