Louisa Landwehr representing Options, gave a program on popular garden plants all of which are available at the Options Garden Center where the four employees help grow the plants to sell and help fund the project. Landwehr also brought samples from the weaving store which was started by Karen Pfeifer, Middendorf's Restaurant. She addressed the Gardenettes at their April 18 meeting, held at the Strawberry Board building.
Hostesses for the meeting were Vicky Fannaly, Pat Walsh, Karen Moran, and Linda Taranto. Anna Poland, outgoing president, opened the meeting. She will be turning the office over to Sonya Avery at the club's May installation banquet to be held at Ponchatoula Steak and Seafood May 9.
She joined everyone in welcoming Susan Pizani, the club's newest member. Sandra Haro made roster stickers with Pizani's contact information so that members could update their yearbooks.. Jane O'Flynn gave the blessing. Poland asked prayers for the many members who are having health problems including Liz Anderson, Diane Dufour, Libbie Barron, Margaret Hardin, Peggy Avery and Margaret Bailey. Ellen Pusey, Sunshine committee, will be following up on them.
A floral design entitled "Spring Awakening" was shown by Dottie Boudreaux. She and Bailey brought horticulture exhibits. Members present but not mentioned included Marilyn Wright, Liz Sanderson and Carol Borgstede.
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc. Haro announced that the Birds, Butterflies and Conservation photo contest had been judged and that winners would be announced at the May banquet. She also said that the coupons for schools would be presented in May.
According to Cricket Ayala, the club's Penny Pines Project may have enough money to purchase an acre worth of trees in a national forest. A motion was made to supplement any funds that were short of that goal from the treasury.
Poland said that the National Garden Week observance planned for the first week in June would probably include a book "The Saved Seed" presentation to the Ponchatoula Library. A scholarship would be presented to a Ponchatoula High School student next month. Avery made plans to hold a group baby shower May 17 for Restoration House ladies, sponsored by the club members.
