Gardenettes gathered at Tasker Memorial Park on North First Street to celebrate Arbor Day, the third Saturday in January. District B Councilwoman Rosalind Batiste helped plant a nuttall oak tree to commemorate the occasion.
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc.
Ellen Pusey, gave a history of Arbor Day and noted that different states celebrate it at the time climatically appropriate. In Louisiana, this month is January. Tree chairman Anna Poland gave a description of the nuttall oak and its growing habits.
Tasker park was named in honor of the first black mayor of Ponchatoula, Arthur Tasker, who served 1873-1874. Margaret Bailey gave an overview of Tasker and his service to the city. Councilwoman Batiste outlined her visions for the park and its future improvements.
Joan Morse read Joyce Kilmer's poem "Trees" written in 1914 and still enjoyed today. Also present were Gardenettes Margaret Hardin, Vicky Fannaly, and Marilyn Wright.
