Ponchatoula City Hall received the Genesis Award for their landscaping from the Gardenettes. The garden club represented by Cricket Ayala, presented the plaque for November and December to Mayor Bob Zabbia on November 8.
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc. The landscape maintained by Prestige One is mainly evergreens – creeping juniper, camellias, azaleas, crepe myrtle, Chinese holly and oaks. Other accent plants include flax, lily, ginger, and ornamental corn plants. The crepe myrtle and oak trees will be wrapped in lights for the Christmas season.
Attending the presentation were City Hall staff members: Bailey Breaux, Michelle Roy, Caroline Ott, Tara Umbach, Brandon Fletcher, Nikki James, Lisa Jones and Melanie Scott. Ponchatoula’s First Lady Kim Zabbia participated. Gardenettes assisting were Marilyn Wright, Sunday Hanson, Cynthia Cummer, Mary Hirsch, Jamie LeBlanc, and Dottie Boudreaux.

Ponchatoula Police Department

The Ponchatoula Police Department located at 195 North 6th St. received the September-October Genesis Award from the Gardenettes. The landscaping around the Police Department is mostly evergreens: hawthorns, Chinese Ligustrum, tall holly trees, azaleas and flax lilies. There is also a row of crape myrtles in the front and in back a row of magnolias. This beautiful landscaping is maintained by Prestige One.
Attending the award ceremony were Margaret Bailey, Susan Pizani, Cricket Ayala Chairman, Bry Layrisson Chief of Police , Ellen Pusey, Shay Scallan Secretary, Kathy Bruce, Sandy Cusick. Attending but not pictured were Jim Betbeze Assistant Chief of Police and Lt. Kenny Schliegelmeyer.

The Gardenettes awarded the July/August Genesis Award for attractive commercial landscaping to the Ponchatoula Information Center located at #10 W. Pine Street.
Gardenettes, a local garden club, are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc.
This tiny brick building was the Police Station from 1950's into the early 1970's. Prior to that it was a tiny wooden police station. There are roses, Vinca, and hanging baskets of petunias. You will also see a Little Free Library and one of our big strawberries along with a bench to enjoy a rest and talk to one of the volunteers, according to Margaret Bailey, chairman for the award.
Chamber of Commerce volunteers were on hand for the ceremony. Some included Some included Billie Jean Laird, Dot Lavigne, Margaret Joiner, Adeline and Annie Gaudin, Shelby Klipple, Susan and Barton Migues, Mary Smith, and Lil Mirando.
After the presentation at which Mayor Bob Zabbia and Rhonda Sheridan participated, the garden club retired to Deja Brew coffee shop across the street.

Mandy May Fine Arts

Gardenettes awarded the May/June Genesis Award to Mandy May Fine Arts located at 128 West Pine Street, May 10. The business was chosen for their attractive use of plantings.
The garden club is a member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc.
There are hanging baskets of Mandevilla and black urns of Hibiscus surrounded by Impatiens. The shop has a bench made from a car and a painted pelican by the entrance. Over the door is a lovely painted Magnolia. The plantings were done by the owner Mandy Poche's husband Josh Poche. The plants are from Smiths Nursery.

Twin Steeples Creative Arts Center

March\April Genesis Award was presented by the Gardenettes to Twin Steeples Creative Arts Center at 220 East Oak Street. Founded by Harry Gabriel in 2020 these two historic churches provide a venue for visual, literary and performing arts. Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc.
The entrance to the courtyard is surrounded by azaleas accented by distillium, dianthis, and petunias. Maple trees are planted in the courtyard which is bordered in the back by Japanese Yews. Joshua Duncan is the Executive Director of Twin Steeples and Katie Albert is the talented landscaper.

Gardenettes awarded Amy Smith and Brittany Howes, owners of Strawberry Manor event center, the Genesis Award for January/February. Strawberry Manor located at 1690 Veteran Ave. was the previous home of Will Ed. Butler and later the Steve Pugh family. The well established landscaping is maintained and improved upon by Sergio Pineda of Year Round Landscaping and lovingly tended by owner Bobby Smith.
Members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc., the Gardenettes were founded in 1942.
The property is surrounded by azaleas, camellias, Southern magnolias, Japanese magnolias, oaks, Crepe myrtles and other mature trees. One of many conversation areas has a trickling well flowing into a goldfish pond where you can find holly, knock out roses and other seasonal plants and shrubs.
In front Strawberry Manor are beds of Viola, dusty miller, Distylium 'Cinnamon Girl.' The main doorway is flanked by antique urns full of ferns.
