AUGUST 2, 2018
Pam Byers
143 Braville Street
Hot and humid describe the days of August. Many plants are stressed from the heat on dry days or steam on rainy days. Jimmy and Pam Byers at 143 Braville in Ponchatoula have been diligent in maintaining their landscape. They have been awarded Garden of the Month for August by the Gardenettes. The Gardenettes are a Ponchatoula garden club and are members of District VI Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. (LGCF) and members of the Deep South Region of the National Garden Clubs Inc. (NGC).
At the front entrance is a seating area where you can rest after hours of yard work or just to enjoy the colorful flowers. Crepe Myrtles line the side drive and along the side of the house are mandevillas with a variety of plants. Pam has azaleas camellias ligustrum and pieris, lantanas, bleeding heart vine, South Carolina vine, Confederate Jasmine vine, English ivy and many other bushes and shrubs. Also many flowering annuals add color. Many plants are protected from the sun by the shade of large trees. Pam states the sun loving plants are doing well under their shade rather than in the sun (just too hot even for them). In the patio area are potted plants collected by Pam over the 6 years that she and Jimmy have lived at this location. Yard art and flags add to the landscape.
Pam’s love for gardening has been handed down through the generations along with many gardening tips. Thanks for this colorful landscape in our community.

According to garden club committee spokesman Margaret Bailey, with January's cold and snowy weather, there were no flowers blooming. But the Zabbias yard is lushly landscaped with crape myrtle, azaleas, sweet olives, river birch, Indian Hawthorne, holly fern, Liriope, Agapanthus and Nandina with their red berries.
At the front door are two Japanese magnolia with buds waiting to be the first blooms of spring. The back yard has a deck area with metal art work and a continuation of the front landscaping. Mayor Zabbia fondly pointed out a rose bush that he got from his grandmother's garden. As with most gardeners the yard is his therapy.
