Mary Elliott McCormick, a Ponchatoula fern specialist and nursery owner, spoke to the Gardenettes Garden Club November 10 at the Strawberry Festival Board building. She brought many unique specimens of ferns and explained how to care for them. She also brought rooted cuttings for members to share.
Also addressing the group was Courtney Murphy, development officer for the Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services. She outlined the work that was being done to care for children who had been physically and psychologically abused. She told of the new facility in Loranger that would be opening. The children aged seven to eleven would be leaving a four-acre care center and going to a 126-acre site which would have a 62-acre playground area.
The club welcomed its newest member, Sherry Klein. Membership chairman Pat Walsh introduced new members Sunday Hanson and Betty Jordan who joined in May. Karen Moran gave the prayer which was followed by the collect and pledge of allegiance. The meeting was opened by President Vicky Fannaly. Secretary’s report by Jamie LeBlanc was dispensed as this was the first meeting of the club’s year. Treasurer Ellen Pusey reported on the bank balance.
A nominating committee for the next year’s officers will include Susan Pizani, Cynthia Cummer and LeBlanc. Bosom Buddy Bag chairman Dottie Boudreaux said that there would be a workday soon to make more bags pending approval from the hospital. Pizani invited everyone to help plant a Live Oak tree for Arbor Day on January 21, the third Friday of that month. Leblanc collected money for the Penny Pines Project for re-planting trees in the Kisatchie, Louisiana’s only National Forest.
New program started by Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. president Roxanna Champagne called “Quarters for Waters” will help get clean water equipment to countries in Latin America. The National Garden Clubs Inc. have partnered with Global Partners Running Waters Inc. to increase access to safe water. The club will be collecting loose change to send to this cause. Gardenettes are also members of Deep South Garden Clubs Inc.
Marilyn Wright announced Garden of the Month honors were given to Norma and Ed Huber on S. Ninth Street. The official presentation will be held shortly. Carol McGough said that the club would be decorating the two Christmas Trees in North Oaks Main lobby and Emergency Room lobby on Tuesday November 30 at 9 a.m. She encouraged members to help with this traditional start to the holidays.
Hostesses for the meeting included Wright, Pusey and Margaret Hardin. Door prizes were provided by the hostesses. The club dined at Jeannie’s Restaurant in Hammond after the meeting. The blessing at lunch was given by Carol McGough.
The club’s December Christmas Tea will be held in the home of Kathy Bruce in Loranger. Co-hostesses for the meeting will be Carol McGough and Margaret Bailey.
