Begonia propagation and classification highlighted the Gardenettes January 11 meeting. Retired nursery owner Cynthia
Moran brought specimens of the eight general groups of the plant. Moran is District VI Director for the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc.
About 2,000 species of begonias and even more hybrids, make begonias a very popular plant for enthusiasts everywhere, according to Cynthia Moran, former nursery owner and District VI Director for the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. Moran spoke to the Gardnettes at their January 11 meeting, held in the Strawberry Board Building.
Moran demonstrated how to propagate the fleshy plants through two types of stem cuttings, rhizone cuttings and leaf cuttings. She brought terrariums made from disposable plastic food boxes to show how these throw-aways could become tiny greenhouses. She and the Gardenettes are members of Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc.
Hostesses for the meeting were Cynthia Cummer, Sandy Cusick and Jamie LeBlanc. Members made plans for Arbor Day on January 20 when they will plant a Shumard Oak tree. Margaret Bailey, chairman of Garden of the Month and Genesis, outlined plans for presenting both awards this month.
The club held a table arrangement workshop in preparation for their February 8 meeting where they will welcome the Tangipahoa parish area garden clubs. Arrangements for that event were discussed.
