GUEST SPEAKER JOHN CLEARY, MASTER GARDENER
Making Mason Bee Houses
John Cleary, Master Gardener, demonstrated how to make Mason Bee houses out of bamboo, at the Gardenettes April meeting held in the home of Vicky Fannaly, club president.
Cleary elaborated on the life cycle of this species of bee and outlined it's importance in polinating. Mason bees lay their eggs in cells. The recommended length of the nesting tubes should be 12 inches to allow the bees to lay an egg, deposit pollen for the larva to eat, then seal off the cell. The next egg is laid in the space ahead until the entire tube is filled. The larva may stay as long as a year before it matures.
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc.
The meeting was opened with a prayer from Kathy Bruce, chaplain. Garden of the Month chairman, Margaret Bailey described the Garden of the Month winners, Joan and Patricia Barze, lovely garden on N. First Street. The two month Genesis Award was given to Twin Steeples last month.
Ellen Pusey made a presentation to Cleary, then gave her treasurer's report. Cynthia Cummer gave a report on sunshine committee and birthdays. Jamie LeBlanc passed around the Penny Pines container for members to put spare change. When the money adds up, it is sent to re-forest an acre with pine trees at Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana.
Exhibit chairman, Bruce, awarded blue stars to Vicky Fannaly for her horticulture specimens. Bruce and Bailey brought place settings for exhibits. Popular vote was awarded to Bailey. Bruce offered horticulture bottles donated by Linda Chutz, Master Gardener, for members to use when bringing floral specimens.
Fannaly announced that the club received first place in the state and in the six-state region for their publicity pressbook at the recent Deep South Convention, held in Kenner. She reminded the group that the awards banquet was moved to May 3, at Murphy's Seafood Restaurant in Hammond.
