SPEAKER: Sunday Hanson, Master Gardener - Stop and Smell the Tomatoes
Gardenette Sunday Hanson gave a powerpoint presentation "Stop and Smell the Tomatoes" on successful growing techniques for tomato plants. She addressed the October 11 Gardenette meeting held at the Strawberry Board Building.
According to Hanson, there are two types of people, those who grow tomatoes annually for that homegrown taste and those who only think about it. She recommended planting the transplants so deep that only the leaves and an inch of stem show above ground. This gives the plant a chance to make extra roots along the buried stem. She gave lots of pointers for insect protection collars and sturdy tomato cages.
The club is a member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc. The meeting was hosted by Cricket Ayala, Rose Ann Husser and Margaret Bailey who gave the opening prayer. Corresponding secretary Cynthia Cummer updated the group regarding birthdays and illness notes sent. A finance report was presented by Ellen Pusey.
Bailey and Mellie Singer judged the horticulture and floral displays. Bailey then reported on the October Garden of the Month which was presented to Paulette and James Lewis, 428 N. Third St. Ayala spoke on the presentation of the Genesis commercial landscaping award which went to the Ponchatoula Police Department.
President Vicky Fannaly asked for suggestions for Make a Difference Day, Octobeer 28. Bailey offered to host the event which will consist of carnations being given out in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. She plans to do this in the downtown area.
The November meeting will be held November 8 with Ellen Pusey, Carol McGough and Margaret Hardin acting as co-hostesses. Door prizes were won by Singer, Hanson and McGough. Dottie Boudreaux conducted a 50/50 raffle which was won by Pusey. A white elephant sale was held as a club benefit.
