Program: Billie Jo Laird, Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce, “Shade Gardening”
Billie Jo showed photos of her massive oak tree before she turned it into a festive shade garden.
The oak had been damaged by a tornado and instead of removing it, she gave it time to heal. In exchange the tree sheltered her collection of hostas and "gift plants" shared from friends' gardens.

BILLIE JO LAIRD
When a tornado damaged her centuries old Live Oak tree, Billie Jo Laird, Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce, was faced with an expensive removal or a decision to let the tree heal itself. Laird spoke to the Gardenettes at their October 9 meeting held in the home of Cynthia Cummer in Belle Foret.
Opting for giving the tree a chance, she discovered that she could turn disaster into a lovely shade garden with places to relax and unwind. Experimenting with hostas and friendship plants received from gardens of her acquaintances, she found that the tree made shelter for her plants during the winter besides mulching them with its leaves.
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc. The club is planning a trip to Nottaway Plantation later this month to attend the District VI Fall Meeting.
President Sonya Avery opened the meeting, and chaplain Joan Morse gave a prayer for club members who are experiencing health issues. Parliamentarian Cricket Ayala introduced the guest speaker. Hostesses included Cynthia Cummer, Margaret Bailey, Marilyn Wright, Anna Poland and Jamie LeBlanc.
Horticulture exhibits were provided by Vicky Fannaly, Poland, Bailey, Ellen Pusey, and Jane O'Flynn. A floral arrangement entitled "Welcome Fall" was provided by Poland. Judging was conducted by Sandra Haro.
Following the meeting, the club delivered 70 colorful Bosom Buddy Bags for cancer and surgery patients to use to hold drainage bags. This was coordinated by Make a Difference chairman Carol McGough and Bosom Buddy Bag chairman Karen Moran to honor the annual
volunteer day and Breast Cancer Awareness month. Other committee members present were Margaret Hardin, Avery and Wright.
