National Garden Week

June 6 photos from today at the Governor’s Mansion courtesy of Kathy Bedenbaugh. There were approximately 50 state garden club members in attendance. Mary Hazen was the Master of Ceremonies, Lena Bateman, President-Elect, read the National Garden Week Proclamation, Jeanette Gatzman, President, presented Mrs. Edwards with an Honorary LGCF, Inc. Membership, and Joe Baucum introduced Peggy Martin, The Katrina rose was named after her. According to Mary Hazen. LGCF, Inc. donated 8 Peggy Martin roses to the Mansion. It seems that one will be given to Kathleen Blanco since she was governor during Katrina. She would have been there yesterday but she was in D.C. on business.

Joe Baucum, LGCF, Inc. Representative on the Urban Forestry Council and President of Better Swamps and Garden G.C. in Dist. II introducing Peggy Martin. Joe mentioned that Mrs. Martin is a rose aficionado and has raised many roses over the years. Her rose survived Hurricane Katrina and with the help of Dr. William Welch of Texas A&M, the rose has been propagated and sold all over the world.
