Camellias of Australia
John Grimm, Master Gardener and owner of Camellia Heaven in Bush, presented a slide show of camellias of Western Australia to the Gardenettes at their January 10 meeting. Despite the less than ideal conditions offered by the country for the growth of this favored winter plant, he found many exceptional blooming camellias.
Grimm, who belongs to many specialty plant groups is a member of Belle Oaks Garden Club. He serves on the board of the American Camellia Society. Gardenettes and Belle Oaks are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc.
Guests included Mona Middlebrook, Sandy Grimm, Timothy McLendon, and new Gardenette member Virginia Hawkins. Hostesses for the event included Cynthia Cummer, Jamie LeBlanc, and Sandy Cusick. Members congratulated Cricket Ayala on her upcoming birthday.
Following Grimm's presentation, the business meeting was called to order. Kathy Bruce gave an opening prayer and the collect. Corresponding secretary, Cummer updated the group on those who were ill and listed the February birthdays. Exhibits committee members Bruce and Melly Singer judged the horticulture specimens and awarded ribbons for condition and excellence. Members who brought specimens were Vicky Fannaly and Margaret Bailey.
Arbor Day chairman, Susan Pizani, invited everyone to attend the Arbor Day ceremony set for January 23 at 11:00 a.m. on the south side of Memorial Park.
