Program: Colleen Scott, Louisiana Master Gardener, Tennessee Master Gardener, Past President of Hammond Garden Club—“Strawbale Gardening”
Colleen Scott demonstrated using straw bales as raised flower or vegetable beds to the Gardenettes at their April 17 meeting held in the home of Vicky Fannaly. Scott is a Tangipahoa and Tennessee Master Gardener, as well as a member and past president of Hammond Garden Club.
Bales can be stacked, placed end to end or used in as many combinations as the imagination can allow. They need to be treated for ten or more days and then planted. Scott suggests using vining plants in pockets around the outside to cover the bales. She reported up to 75 pounds of harvest from a zucchini plant using this method.
Hostesses for the meeting were Fannaly, Sandra Haro, Pat Walsh and Karen Moran. Floral arrangements were provided by Ellen Pusey and Anna Poland. Guests included Abbie Gauthier, Cynthia and George Orgeron.
The club is a member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc.
Sonya Avery said that the members gave a baby shower for ladies at Restoration House who completed the program. She said that left over items were donated to that organization for use in their programs for pregnant women.
Poland reported on the scholarship fund. Cricket Ayala showed a certificate acknowledging the club's contribution toward planting pine trees on acreage in Kisatchie State Park. Cynthia Cummer invited members to help present Garden of the Month for April on Colver Drive.
Fannaly said that the annual Publicity Pressbook placed second in its category in the state competition. The next meeting will be the annual banquet to be held at Murphy's Seafood & Steak restaurant in Hammond.

Exhibits: “Easter Bunny, Please Stop Here” – Designer’s choice creating an Easter themed arrangement - brought by Anna Poland and Ellen Pusey
