Village Oaks strip mall received the Gardenettes, a Ponchatoula garden club, Genesis Award for commercial landscaping for November-December. Village Oaks is located at 18539 East Hwy 22.
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc. This award is to encourage and reward businesses that beautify their property with landscaping and to improve the appearance of the community.
According to Margaret Bailey, club chairman, "When you pass Village Oaks you will see well-maintained landscaping of Agapanthus, purple Loropetalum, boxwood, Indian Hawthorn and American holly trees with bright red berries."

Cypress Reserve Subdivision

Cypress Reserve, D. H. Horton Home Builders, a subdivision located on Highway 22 east of Ponchatoula, received the September-October Genesis Award from the Gardenettes. The garden club is a member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc.

Club spokesperson Margaret Bailey said: "Of course there are many cypress trees along with magnolia trees. Their stunning waterfall and the sales office is surrounded by many ornamental grasses and shrubs. Mexican heather, gardenias, roses, and Sunshine yellow privet just to name a few. The outstanding landscaping is maintained by Grass Masters.

Paul's Cafe

Paul’s Cafe receives the July - August Genesis Award. The cafe has huge pots of golden Hibiscus blooms flanking the entrance. There are also hanging baskets of pink petunias and red bougainvilleas.
Congratulations to Paul’s for keeping these beautiful plants alive during our long hot summer. Thank you for making Ponchatoula beautiful.

Knights of Columbus Hall

Alex Joiner, President of the Board of Directors of the Father Vander Hayden Home, Inc, was presented the Genesis Award by Gardenette, Anna Poland. The Knights of Columbus Hall, #4874 is located at 1701 Pecan Court.
Poland said, "You will see Bradford Pear Trees, Loropetalum, and Crepe Myrtles Trees surrounding the newly resurfaced parking lot. The driveway is lined with red Knock-Out roses. There are also two surviving Pecan Trees occupying a grassy area in the parking lot. Members of the council maintain the gardens and the building with help from Hammond Firefighter, Brandon Fairborn. Mr. George Patti cuts the grass."

First United Methodist Church

First United Methodist Church of Ponchatoula was presented the Genesis Award by the Gardenettes March 7. Margaret Bailey presented the award to Rev. John Lacascio.
The church recently embarked on a landscape renewal program implemented by church members/master gardeners Lisa Madden and Anna Poland. Many other church members also assisted in the renewal project.
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., National Garden Clubs Inc.
Tall planters containing cast iron plants, English ivy, and sedges flank the front entrance. Clumping blue Liriope surrounds the large lighted sign. The Grotto currently is planted with seasonal pansies, snapdragons, and ornamental kale with miniature gardenias anchoring each side of the cross. The office entrance is enhanced with a row of dwarf gardenias on each side of the door. A pair of planters are found at the back entrance containing crotons, pansies and Liriope.
The landscape committee received horticultural advice from Jason Stagg, Instructor from the LSU Agcenter, Hammond Research Station and help in securing healthy and affordable plants from Allen Owings, senior. horticulturist of Bracy’s Nursery. Lawn maintenance is done by Woody Watts.

The Gardenettes January / February Genesis Award was presented January 18 to the new City of Ponchatoula Police Department building in the old Homestead building. Jeff Roberts with Prestige Landscaping planted a variety of Azaleas, Camellias, Yaupon holly, Indian Hawthorn, Variegated Liriope.
