OCTOBER 2021 GARDENETTE NEWSLETTER
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., National Garden Clubs Inc.
MEETING: Regretfully, it seems best to cancel the October meeting as things are still upset by Hurricane Ida. Looking forward to a Thanksgiving meeting in November! Linda Ryan was going to talk to us about making floral arrangements. Hostesses for November are Ellen Pusey, Margaret Hardin and Marilyn Wright. Because of the cancelled September and October meetings, Jamie Leblanc will be helping Cynthia Cummer and Susan Pizani in January. Pat Walsh, Betty Jordan and Karen Moran will handle March. In April, Vicky Fannaly and Sunday Hanson will hostess in April.
DISTRICT VI FALL MEETING: The annual meeting will be held at Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge Tuesday, October 19. Cost is $38.50. Deadline for registration is October 5. The speakers are well known horticulturists. If you are interested, the form is on the lgcf.org webpage. I can someone if you need a ride. I already committed to taking two people.
WAYS AND MEANS: Our club is obliged to provide an auction item. Usually, we get something for about $30 to donate. I was thinking that if you had some small, nice item to donate, we could save the club some money. I am making a basket and donating wine, local food things, etc. If you make jelly and have an extra or some Ponchatoula souvenir that you don’t mind giving – that would be fantastic. No pressure!
GARDEN SPOT: What happened to our beautiful yards?! Our state Live Oak chairman had a massive oak tree crunch her house. Seems an injustice to be sure after all her fighting to preserve them.
VICKY FANNALY: I lost a lot of tin roofing on my business, but my home made it – delighted!
MARILYN WRIGHT: I’m good, have electricity and WiFi. Willing to help someone else if I can. Let me know if u know of anyone personally that needs something that I can help with.
ELLEN PUSEY: We did fine here on Hickory St. but our daughter, Cathy, didn’t fare so well. Two huge trees thru her roof causing major damage to AC system (which is in attic) rain poured in ruining kitchen cabinets, etc, wood floors in living room, mold developing and on and on. They’re living here until………. Things moving slowly but will get there and most importantly, everyone is well. They live on corner of Weinberger and Highland Rd. in Joan Morse and Marilyn’s neighborhood, was hit very hard.
KATHY BRUCE: we are doing well. Little damage, feeling blessed!
SUNDAY HANSON: House & all animals ok. Many beautiful big trees down. No power but using a gas generator. Like camping but you can sleep in your own bed.
CYNTHIA CUMMER: We are fine. Yard, tree, and fence damage. Lots of family and dogs staying with us, but they finally got power back and went home. We just got internet today because we had a satellite internet installed. Spectrum has been out the whole time. Lost my two magnolia trees. 😢 We are safe and that is the most important thing! I hope everyone else is also!
KAREN MORAN: Thanks for checking. I have phone only. Been without tv or internet since the storm. I saw this because I went somewhere where I could connect.
JAMIE LEBLANC: We are good. So glad to see that our other Gardenettes are too.
MARGARET HARDIN: Margaret left town for the Mid West until things get better! You go girl!
HIGHWAY 22 BLUES: Some photos taken on the east side of Ponchatoula. High water!
MEETING REFRESHMENTS: Jamie LeBlanc made a motion, seconded by Vicky Fannaly, that instead of the hostesses being responsible for bringing refreshments to the meeting, we go to a restaurant afterward. The choice of place would be the hostesses’ selection. Those who don’t want to go, do not have to. Voting yes were Vicky Fannaly, Jamie LeBlanc, Cynthia Cummer, Susan Pizani, Margaret Bailey, Marilyn Wright, Karen Moran, Kathy Bruce, Sunday Hanson. The best choice is to leave it to the hostess if she wants to bring food or have everyone eat at a designated restaurant.
NEVER FORGET GARDEN: A garden of white roses commemorating the centennial of the unknown soldier and veterans is being set up in the Veterans Memorial Garden at the Louisiana State Capitol. The Gardenettes sent a donation toward this in the name of the City of Ponchatoula Garden Clubs as members of our club were also members of Community Garden Club. The project is being sponsored by Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., American Rose Society and Daughters of the American Revolution.
HISTORIC NOTE: In 1946-1947 the club began a new war - this time on rodents - with Mrs. E. J. Kevlin (now deceased) chairman raising $679.00. This was collected from the businessmen and others, and the town enjoyed a little peace at least for a time from the rats.
PRAYERS NEEDED: Long time member Debbie Henagan in Houston, was admitted to ICU with serious pneumonia, lung and kidney issues. Because of her location, she has not been able to make many meetings. She and her husband attended our yearbook luncheon at Salty Joe’s.
OPEN HOUSE: Mizell’s Camellia Nursery sent this invitation:
