ARBOR DAY 2023
Gardenettes observed Arbor Day by planting a Shumard Oak in Memorial Park, Friday January 20. Assisting in the ceremony was Kim Zabbia, Ponchatoula's First Lady, who read a proclaimation from Mayor Bob Zabbia proclaiming the day officially Arbor Day.
Gardenette Mary Hirsch read a Remembrance Poem on trees, author unknown. Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc. Gardenettes attending included Sandy Cussick, Margaret Hardin, Cricket Ayala, Margaret Bailey and Vicky Fannaly. Representing the City of Ponchatoula to dig the hole was Pierre James.
Assisting with the program was Gardenette Sunday Hanson who gave the cultural needs of this deciduous oak, noting that the bright red fall coloring was very desireable. She also noted that the tree was drought resistant and fast growing. The Shumard Oak, Quercus shumardii, is a desireable tree for shelter and color.
