Bill and Cynthia Cummer
Belle Foret
Bill and Cynthia Cummer, Belle Foret subdivision, received Garden of the Month honors for August. Cynthia credits Bill with the gardening skills that make this lovely home a hands down winner.
Gardenettes are members of District VI - Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and National Garden Clubs Inc.
According to recipient Cynthia Cummer who is a Gardenette: "When we bought this house five years ago, the builder had clear cut the lot, except for a sweetgum tree. The previous owner had not put in any beds or landscaping.(just a lot of weeds and hard clay). My husband Bill planned and dug out all the beds. He put in the soil, edging, water systems, landscape lighting, and plants. It has been a work in progress and lots of 'Blood, Sweat, and Tears.' Only people of our generation will understand that last reference! At previous homes, Bill put in the landscaping, but this one was a real challenge."
Water features include multi-tiered fountains in the front bed and in the bed by the pool. Statuary collected over the years is throughout the gardens. Bill also designed and built the arbor and garden gate leading to a large vegetable and herb garden in raised beds, she said.
FEATURES -
Front beds :
anchored by two Loquat trees, variegated Abelia, red knock-out roses, Aztec grass, flax lilies, seasonal flowers around the three tiered fountain
Side of house:
Walkway from drive around side of house is lined with lantern lighting and pink azaleas. A bed of variegated Ginger and bromeliads is under a mature sweetgum tree.

There are three fruit trees in one area of the yard that have been planted in honor of the births of their three grandchildren. Surrounding a large brick fireplace are holly trees, Ligustrum, cactus and various other plants.
Debbie was very proud to show us her hydroponic planter which last year produced beautiful, healthy tomatoes and heads of lettuce. She is anxious to get started on her veggies this year as soon as the weather allows.
