Garden of the Month 2020
Rick and Kathy Ezell Prine
Magnolia Cove
23092 Hwy. 22 E
October 22, 2020
Rick and Kathy Ezell Prine, 23092 Hwy. 22 East, received November Garden of the Month honors from the Gardenettes for their manicured grounds and landscaping.
"I enjoy working outside so much more than working inside. I think the property’s soil has a lot to do with the success of our flower gardens." said Kathy Prine. "We absolutely love living here. We have named our property Magnolia Cove because of the plentiful old magnolia trees that surrounds the property."
Set back from the highway, it is hard to appreciate the time that the Prines have spent on their colorful annual plantings and blooming shrubs, according to Marilyn Wright, garden club chairman. White roses front the main entrance and massive sun-patiens in many colors abound.
Tropical plants line the outdoor family area overlooking the swimming pool. Whimsical seasonal decorations and chrysanthemums are placed where they can be appreciated.
The back of the property which leads to the river is filled with relocated ferns, elephant ears and banana trees that have been kept from earlier plantings. Many magnolia trees dot the landscape.
The Gardenettes are proud to give the award to such a deserving couple, Wright said. The garden club is a member of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc.

Glen and Rita Drude
103 Braville Street
February 6, 2020
February Garden of the Month was awarded to Glen and Rita Drude, who live at 103 Braville Street by the Gardenettes.
The Drude’s live on a dead end street in the heart of downtown Ponchatoula. They spend many hours working in their yard. They completely revamped their flower beds using rocks as a mulch. Even with the brisk winter weather, they have red and yellow Knock Out Roses blooming.
According to Kathy Bruce, garden club committee, the focal point in the front yard is a wooden bridge that takes you up the sidewalk to the front porch. There is a large accent rock garden between two oak trees that has a sugar kettle with a red Knock Out rose and green shallots mingled inbetween. The flower beds edging the house have various statuary accents among purple periwinkles. There is also a Meyer lemon tree in a corner bed that produced 44 lemons this season. Another bed beside the driveway has a Mary statue accented with roses also. Their backyard has a Mandarin and a Kumquat tree that are full of fruit, which the Drude’s kindly shared with the Gardenette ladies. Mr. Drude has a huge crop of green onions in the backyard that he also shared.
"The Gardenettes appreciate the Drude’s sharing their gardens, and we thank you for sharing your fruits and vegetables with our group" she said.
Assisting with the award presentation were Gardenettes Cricket Ayala, Margaret Bailey, Kathy Bruce, Vicky Fannaly, Joan Morse, Jane O’ Flynn, Anna Poland, Ellen Pusey, and Marilyn Wright.
