GUEST SPEAKER: Cindy Moran, Baton Rouge Garden Club
"Fall In - Spring Out!"
Cindy Moran, Baton Rouge Garden Club, featured plants to grow in the fall for spring blossoms in her address “Fall In, Spring Out,” at the Gardenettes November 8 meeting in the Strawberry Board building in Memorial Park.
Moran recommended foxglove, snapdragons, Heuchera, Verbena, Lamium, among others. Moran brought flowers for both shade and sun. Planting these cold tolerant plants now will give them time to get established and produce a beautiful spring display.
Hostesses for the meeting were Ellen Pusey, Carol McGough and Margaret Hardin. The club welcomed a new member, Doris Pennington, a guest of Marilyn Wright. Dottie Boudreaux gave the opening prayer.
Genesis Award Chairman, Cricket Ayala, invited members to help present the landscaping award to the City of Ponchatoula for their fall landscaping. President Vicky Fannaly asked members to decide whether or not to continue their White Elephant sales which the club tried for a two-month trial. It was decided to discontinue the program and donate any unsold items to Mary Hirsch for the Swampy Paws annual yard sale.
Sunday Hanson gave a report on the District VI Fall Meeting held in Hammond recently. November birthdays included Cynthia Cummer and Karen Hotard. Members congratulated Mellie Singer on her new granddaughter. Following the treasurer’s report by Pusey, Jamie LeBlanc encouraged members to donate to Penny Pines, a fund to plant trees at Kisatchie National Forest.
Pusey brought exhibits and horticulture specimens. Marilyn Wright gave out buckeye seeds for planting or good luck tokens. These came from Margaret Bailey’s tree. Wright then gave a recap of Make a Difference Day when Gardenettes gave out cancer awareness tokens. Susan Pizani reminded members that we will be planting an Arbor Day tree in January. The club welcomed back Rose Husser who had been ill. The December meeting will be held at the home of Kathy Bruce.
