Working at the Butterfly Garden Thursday in Kiwanis Park were Gardenettes Kathy Bedenbaugh, Anna Poland and Dale Rieth. Mayor Bob Zabbia approved pine mulch for the club's project.
According to Bedenbaugh, "Thursday morning at the butterfly garden, Wayne Aymond with the City delivered the pine bark mulch. Anna, Dale and I spread it. It really looks great in those two large rectangle beds on the south end of the garden. We beat the rain!"
Gardenettes are members of District VI, Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. and Deep South Region, National Garden Clubs Inc.

On May 6, President Margaret Bailey invited everyone to enjoy the Butterfly Garden, bring a chair and your own beverage. Here's how it went down: "Friday afternoon's gathering was enjoyable. The flowers were showing off and the company was pleasant. We got to know each other a little better," According to Margaret.
"We were Angels of Mercy because we saved someone's life.Police were called because there was a man laying by the building face down. He could not be roused but was breathing. EMTS were then called and they said he was lucky that we got help for him. They were unable to rouse him so he was taken to the hospital."
"So glad the Gardenettes were there. As one member said, "God meant for us to be at the Butterfly Garden today." She concluded.

The Gardenettes of Ponchatoula have been busy with upgrading and beautifying the Butterfly Garden in Kiwanis Park. A work day was scheduled for Thursday, May 23rd, and the Gardenettes met at 9 a.m. at the garden, along with some Ponchatoula city workers. Present at the work day were Gardenettes President Dale Rieth with her granddaughter, Marin, Civic Chairman Cheryl Kuhn, Kathy Bedenbaugh, Vicky Fannaly, Margaret Bailey, Cricket Ayala, Janice Hickey and Anna Poland. Ponchatoula City Workers Wayne Aymond, David May, Edward Pines, Alvin Kirby, Heath Gomez, and Charles Zweifel were also present to help spread dirt in the garden.
Thanks to a $1,500 donation by Ponchatoula Councilman Melvin Toomer, the Gardenettes were able to purchase much-needed items to upgrade the Butterfly Garden, including some large planters and new shrubs. A donation of mulch was also made by Acadian Cypress. Gardenettes members have been meeting regularly at the garden this spring to plant new shrubs, perennials and annuals, and also to spread dirt and mulch, and do necessary weeding and maintenance. There is still some work to be done, but the club members are happy with the beautiful results so far. The Gardenettes would like to invite the citizens of Ponchatoula to stop by and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Butterfly Garden in Kiwanis Park.
The Gardenettes is a Ponchatoula garden club and is a member of District VI of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and the Deep South Region of National Garden Clubs, Inc.

Making progress...
Making progress in the newly restored Butterfly Garden, Gardenettes received a generous check from the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce to help purchase plants and supplies for the newly renovated flower beds. Dr. Karen Carter, chamber president, presented a check to Diane Dufour, Gardenette president, at the Chamber meeting Tuesday March 15.
Attending the meeting from the garden club were Present at the meeting were Dale Rieth, Janice Hickey, Mona Middlebrook, and Robin Austin. Rieth gave a presentation on the club’s Cleanest City Contest to the Chamber.
Designed and coordinated by Gardenette Kathy Bedenbaugh in 2002, the Butterfly Garden in Kiwanis Park had many serious problems mainly with weeds and poor soil, so starting last fall an extensive total renovation began. All the plants were removed and stored and new beds and soil were set in place by the City of Ponchatoula.
The biggest step was removing all the plants and bushes, getting the new beds in place and replacing the soil. This was a task that the garden club was not able to do on its own. The city stepped in and made some wonderful improvements.
The garden club has received several contributions from civic clubs and individuals to resume re-planting the beds. According to Dufour, the club thanks those who have contributed to this project and feels that the city will enjoy the completed project.

Total Renovation...
Designed and coordinated by Gardenette Kathy Bedenbaugh in 2000, the Butterfly Garden in Kiwanis Park had many serious problems mainly with weeds and poor soil, so this year began an extensive total renovation.
Working on a new look for the Butterfly Garden, the Gardenettes have enlisted the help of the City of Ponchatoula and the Ponchatoula High School Key Club. The poor soil and weed infestation was a serious problem. Now the dirt has all been removed and replaced with better soil.
Gardenette president Diane Dufour said, “I would like to thank the mayor Bob Zabbia, Rhonda Sheridan at the City Hall, Charles and his City crew, the Key Club, and Tommy Gueydan who provided the much needed mulch.”
The biggest step was removing all the plants and bushes, getting the new beds in place and replacing the soil. This was a task that the garden club was not able to do on its own. The city stepped in and made some wonderful improvements.
Key club members who assisted were Ben Ray, Trey O’Neill, Ned Richardson, Taray O’Neill, Caitlyn Ross and Kristen Hanford.
According to Kathy Bedenbaugh, Gardenette and first vice president of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation (LGCF) Inc., she I had gotten there early and spread the pre-emergence.
Gardenettes Dufour, Mona Middlebrook, Patti Mullins and Bedenbaugh then worked with the Key Club. Ben Ray cleaned up all of the soil that was in the grass and put it back on the cement with what soil was left. The others cleaned up soil that was in the limestone and put it back in the beds. The girls raked the pre-emergence into the soil and wet it down.
All of them helped spread the mulch, but Ray did most of that with Mullins. Two of the girls swept the cement walkways, and the boys cleaned around the crepe myrtles and the elm trees. Dufour and Middlebrook cleaned the grass and blackberry vines out of the bushes on the east side of the pool house. Middlebrook trimmed the roses. Bedenbaugh helped the Key Club and dug nut sedge out of the limestone and watered all of the beds.
