Kyle Martin, second vice president of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc., addressed the Gardenettes at their January meeting held at Joe's Italian Restaurant January 12. The state group has 75 member clubs with 2,085 members.
Besides the obvious benefits of meeting people from all over the state with the same passion for gardening, Martin told of the education opportunities to learn flower arranging, gardening, landscaping and environmental skills. The group offers some nice tours to Holland, Germany and the Biltmore House in Ashville NC.
"There are many opportunities to give service to the community through our civic plantings, arbor day ceremonies, scholarship programs and cleanest city competitions," she said. "The clubs are members of Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc."
Treasurer Ellen Pusey presented a gift to Martin from the club. Hostesses for the meeting were Sandy Cusick, Jamie LeBlanc, Susan Pizani and Cynthia Cummer. Honorary member Joan Morse gave the opening prayer. The club voted to give money to three charities designated by members present.
Arbor Day chairman Pizani announced that the club will plant a live oak tree at the City Hall Annex on Friday, January 21 at 11:30 a.m. Those present will meet for lunch following the ceremony with the mayor. Dottie Boudreaux, Bosom Buddy Bag chairman, said that a work day will be set in February to re-stock the club's supply of hospital drain bags for cancer patients.
Garden of the Month chairman Marilyn Wright invited the members to help her and her committee present the January award to Vera Dunbar, 285 N.W. Railroad Avenue. Rose Ann Husser and Margaret Bailey brought horticulture specimens. Bailey also brought a winter floral arrangement for display. Betty Jordan brought some heirloom rose cuttings to share.
Vicky Fannaly said that the Publicity Pressbook has been sent to the state awards committee for judging. She requested members save any news clippings for the coming year's submission. She also noted that this is the Gardenette's 80th year anniversary.
The club welcomed Mary Hirsch as a new member. Hirsch was Garden of the Month winner in December. Members present but not previously mentioned include Cricket Ayala, Carol McGough, Kathy Bruce, Margaret Hardin, Karen Moran and Sherry Klein.
Gardenettes will be traveling to Amite for their annual Joint Tangipahoa Garden Clubs Meeting sponsored this year by Stem and Stamen Garden Club.
